There is a sound and feel to tradition that you can't invent on the spot. One has to learn it. One has to inherit it. Solid Ray Woods has inherited and learned the sounds of the past in order to take the tradition of soul and rhythm into the future of a new American music. Listen to his voice and his intuitive, and skillful drumming, and it's easy to realize this new artist has the history of rhythm and blues, gospel, and soul on his sleeve, and is able to create a new direction for singer songwriters who sit behind the drum kit rather than the guitar.
Solid Ray has been singing for as long as he can remember . Play drums and singing just seemed to combine naturally. Sitting in with the house band, back when Harriet still owned Pappy and Harriet's, Solid Ray found it easier to lead the song while setting the rhythm pattern on drums. After high school he showed up at every open mic he could find. He got good at accompanying complete strangers like he had practiced with them.
Victoria Williams and Mark Olson with their band, The Harmony Ridge Creekdipper, happen to be looking for a drummer and ask him to join the band. That led to many years of touring around the United States and Europe. Through connection he made in those years he was able to tour with many other acts and got the chance to travel to many other places, including Japan. Around this time he became the drummer for the house band at Pappy and Harriet's. This is where he got serious about developing a lead singer's vocal delivery. After building a few band line ups, recording a EP and playing shows around Southern California, he is ready to record and and tour again.
